Shawnee County working to improve health of community through state rankings

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – Public officials, law enforcement officers and business owners want to help the community get healthy.

The recently-released 2018 County Health Rankings show Shawnee County ranked 61st out of 103 Kansas counties for overall health outcomes, four spots lower than last year. The county also ranks 58 for overall health factors. The annual report looks at issues like crime, unemployment, obesity and housing problems.

One health official says these rankings open a dialog throughout the state.

"It gives us a really wide range of opinions to kind of see what people think are the actual needs of our community so we can make sure that Shawnee County is the best place to live, work, and play," Craig Barnes, the Division Manager for the Shawnee County Health Department, said.

For sale in Shawnee: A regal mansion built next to a landfill | The Kansas City Star

The “for sale” sign goes up this week on what experts say may be the priciest home ever put on the Kansas City housing market.

Downstairs, the home theater features a 120-square-foot screen behind red velvet curtains like you might find at an art house.
